American Express Interchange Rates
What is Interchange?
Interchange is the fee collected by credit card issuers on every processed transaction. Interchange rates are set by the Card Brands (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) and are mandatory for all credit card processors. The tables below show the breakdown of the current American Express interchange rates. The Interchange Plus processing model helps ensure that you only pay the necessary Interchange rates without any additional markups or added fees to your merchant transactions.
How is American Express Interchange Rates Set
For American Express cards, the Interchange rate is determined based on the transaction size and merchant category. Amex credit cards are popular in the dining and travel industries so the interchange rates are highest for merchants within these merchant industries. In general, interchange fees are determined by the level of risk. Transactions with a higher risk of fraud have higher interchange rates.
